Democrats Riot in France

One of the most tiring things about being an American Republican is listening to American Democrats, particularly women, talk about what a superior country France is. When you ask Democrats about where their ideas have been tried or what they would like America to look like, they point to France more than any other country. American Democrats like the more generous social welfare programs, the long vacations, effeminate French men, the supposed emphasis on diplomacy rather than war, the shorter less competitive work week, and the gentle wine and cheese culture.

But, what is the truth about France that delusional Democrats don't see? Firstly, France barely qualifies as a country. The barbarian Americans had to save them in World War 1, World War ll, the Cold War, and now the war on terror. They are a country only because America has been kind enough to prop them up as such.

But they do have that wonderful life style, don't they? Well, not really, unless you don't mind an income 37% less than the one you have in America. Whoops, there goes one of your cars and your house! Yes, they do really have 254 kinds of cheese but the French can't afford to do much on their incomes; so sitting around all day with cheap wine and cheese became the boring but thoroughly sophisticated (in theory anyway) French life style. Two years ago during a record setting heat wave 15,000 elderly French died in nursing homes because they had no air conditioning. In the US, total deaths in such a heat wave would have been near 0 because we can afford air conditioning in our nursing homes, most of which are financed by the gov't which supposedly is not very generous by French standards?

But if their income is low, at least there must be low unemployment-right? Wrong! Unemployment among people of native origin is 9.2%. Among those of foreign origin, the figure is 14% - even after adjusting for educational qualifications. In the U.S. unemployment is only 4.9% for everyone and is not adjusted for educational qualifications. There would be a revolution if unemployment in the United States ever hit 10%.

But at least the French are a kinder and gentler people than we are right? Well, when you notice that the rates of admitted anti-Semitism in France are the highest in the world you do have to wonder. And, if you ask yourself, "where were the children of the 15,000 elderly who died during that fateful summer, the answer you get is: "they were on their 6 week summer vacations being very sophisticated with their wine and 254 kinds of cheese."

And then of course there are now 12 nights (so far anyway) of rioting in 274 French cities (now spreading to Belgium and Germany) that have engulfed all of France during which the French have expressed their inharmonious feelings toward each other once again. It reminds one of World War ll during which half the French sided with the Nazis feeling that Republic of Values wasn't so valuable after all when push came to shove. Oddly, to this day when the French reenact the liberation of Paris from the Nazis they pretend, in the ultimate manifestation of their lingering Napoleonic complex, that they liberated Paris when in fact it was United States who did it for them . Odder still is their lingering love of Napoleon (the French Hitler) whose military victories they still celebrate. They have the only law in the world which requires their text book manufacturers to speak favorably of the colonial era. They have laws to keep their language pure and uncontaminated by English or international words such as "e-mail". They won't allow champaign from outside of France to be sold in France because, they claim, it is not real unless it is made from grapes from their Champaign region. And they were the nation that profited most from to completely corrupt UN "Oil For Food" that may have precipitated the current war in Iraq.

After World War 2 , to show their contempt for our social welfare anti Nazi program, they did not support the United States or NATO at all. They obstructed most of our foreign policy initiatives which were designed to spread freedom, capitalism, Democracy, and defeat the Soviet Union. They honestly believed they were playing an independent role in the Cold War that offered the world an important 3rd alternative, although, beyond the wine and cheese, no one could say what that alternative was.

Now, they have bent over backwards to oppose us, once again, in the war on Muslim terror, and their Muslim population is showing its appreciation by rioting in 274 cities.

But, at least one thing is genuinely world class about the French: self delusion. Despite how embarrassing the last Century turned out for them they are still (at least prior to the current riots) cock sure about their superiority. Here is what President Mitterrand said about American riots to the Washington Post in 1992. He blamed the riots on the "conservative society" that Presidents Reagan and Bush had created and said France is different because "it is the country where the level of social protection is the highest in the world." Well, oh my golly gee, I wonder what he would think now?

On the plus side for France's self described Republic of Values is that, so far anyway, they don't believe in affirmative action or positive discrimination. Interestingly, the United States does, but still both countries have achieved similarly failed results. Also, the rate of mixed marriages in France in very high at almost 25% which speaks well for their genuine belief in equality.

So what are the lessons here? First, the old world French have little to contribute to civilization, second, our Democrats should grow up and not become like the French by imagining that inept federal social welfare can nourish the human soul in any meaningful way, and third, appeasement of Nazi or Muslim terrorists is not a legitimate peace program. Generous social welfare programs create a generous dependency and engender a growing entitlement mentality rather than appreciation and growth from the recipient.

The United States successfully ushered in wave after wave of immigrants, and successfully integrated them by not having generous social welfare programs, but instead by having the Republican attitude which maintained that each individual is miraculously free to create his own welfare and circumstances rather than to imagine it could be stolen from other people through the gov't by electing Democrats.

We had riots, yes, but only when American Blacks began to thoroughly identify with the Democrats who successfully taught them that generous social welfare (later revealed to be near genocidal) was a birthright to which they were entitled, if they voted Democratic. France is stumbling with their first wave of modern immigrants because, from Marx forward, they never have had the Republican mentality which held that liberty is granted to each individual in order that he creatively define and enrich himself and society through private competitive enterprise, rather than by voting for Democrats. To this day 30% of the French work for the gov't, where they can contribute almost nothing; yet in the backward French world they are considered honored jobs for the elite who appease the Nazis, surrender to them, defy American liberty, support the Middle East Intifada, and then encourage French Muslim rioters to seek meaningful lives through them. We all must pray that that American Democrats and their French brethren wake up from their hallucinogenic stupor before it is too late.

Ted,

It's always a pleasure to read such a well informed and self-styled classic writer like you. My problem is that your understanding of the French is tinted by your veneration of all things American, to the exclusion of anything from another culture, or in your case, lack of culture.

You assume that the US won the first and second world wars, and in a sense they were smart enough to come in, late in the game, and tag on to the winning side. In casualties alone, the biggest sacrifice was made by Russia in both cases. On a percentage basis, the US hardly made a dent in their population let alone their territory in either war.

To denigrate the sacrifices made by our allies as they valiantly staved off conquest, and in the case of France, Belgium, Holland and other countries, resisted the Nazis after falling victim to their superior armies, is not worthy of your excellent editorials.

Our performance in WWI was despicable, waiting until the democracies of Europe had bled themselves dry before lifting a finger to come on board. Did you know that Pershing's expeditionary forces when they first landed were obliged to use French weapons because, although we had sent millions of dollars in armament to both sides, we did not have enough for our own soldiers? Does that not remind you of certain deficiencies in the recent Iraq war?

I also shouldn't need to remind you, that the French did indeed lose the Vietnam war, but then again, did we win? Maybe after centuries of European warfare they have learned something we have not and that is the fact that wars settle nothing. The united Europe was bred out of blood, fire and hatred. It is a remarkable feat from which we might learn something. Instead, our position towards Cuba, sitting right off our coast, should have prompted us to seek reconciliation and rapprochement. Instead we maintain this arrogant posture based on the internal political needs of an ingrained voting block.

As far as riots in America is concerned, we had our share, the anti draft riots during the Civil War, the Boston Tea party and the American Revolution could also be considered riots. Of course, I understand that as a Republican, only:"We had riots, yes, but only when American Blacks began to thoroughly
identify with the Democrats who successfully taught them that generous social welfare (later revealed to be near genocidal) would be forthcoming as soon as they voted for them." Is it your opinion that only Blacks in America riot? Is that the party line?

I dunno, I admire your research and attention to detail as well as your complete lack of realism as it relates to the real world. I can see why you are attracted to the Republican party, they have the same approach to reality based on fiction.

Ted,
********Hello
It's always a pleasure to read such a well informed and self-styled classic writer like you.
******thank you

My problem is that your understanding of the French is tinted by your veneration of all
things American,
******very logical of me isn't it to venerate America?

to the exclusion of anything from another culture, or in your case, lack of culture.
******and you'll explain??

You assume that the US won the first and second world wars,
*******yes, and the cold war too

and in a sense they were smart enough to come in, late in the game, and tag on to the
winning side. In casualties alone, the biggest sacrifice was made by Russia in both cases.
******but I didn't disagree did I??

On a percentage basis, the US hardly made a dent in their population let alone their
territory in either war.
******was it the Swiss who liberated Western Europe so they could be free? Isn't thinking fun?

To denigrate the sacrifices made by our allies as they valiantly staved off conquest, and in the case of France, Belgium, Holland and other countries, resisted the Nazis
*******resisted??? they were conquered in 2 weeks???

after falling victim to their superior armies,
*******yes the Germans were superior and smarter because the French were as always, sleeping appeasers. Nice try at an excuse for their deadly incompetence.

is not worthy of your excellent editorials.
*******do you get it now??

Our performance in W.W.I was despicable, waiting until the democracies of Europe had bled themselves dry before lifting a finger to come on board.
******yes always blame America first as if France would come to our aid? If we had stayed out perhaps the 60 million causalities of WW2 would have been avoided. So you say were despicable for not supporting democracies? So should we have a huge army in the middle east to support Israel? Democrats are cowards a heart who don't really see anything to defend about America or democracies

Did you know that Pershing's expeditionary forces when they first landed were obliged to
use French weapons because, although we had sent millions of dollars in armament to both sides, we did not have enough for our own soldiers? Does that not remind you of certain deficiencies in the recent Iraq war?
******so what is your subject?? Oh I get it you are concerned about Democrats who always cut military and intelligence spending because they hate America?

I also shouldn't need to remind you, that the French did indeed lose the Vietnam war,
******all agree but so what?
but then again, did we win?
*******we did win until the Democrats would not support the treaty we signed with South Vietnam prior to our pullout.

Maybe after centuries of European warfare they have learned
something we have not and that is the fact that wars settle nothing.
*******war settled the Nazi issue nicely for western Europe. Isn't thinking fun??

The united Europe
*******dummy, they just voted against the united Europe

was bred out of blood, fire and hatred. It is a remarkable feat from
which we might learn something. Instead, our position towards Cuba, sitting right off our coast, should have prompted us to seek reconciliation and rapprochement.
*******they are filthy communists who condemn all Cubans to a life of misery and extreme poverty. Moreover our policy is mostly dictated by Cubans who hate Castro like we hated Hitler.

Instead we maintain this arrogant posture based on the internal political needs of an
ingrained voting block.
********its arrogant to hate communist killers? The ingrained voting block happens to care about their families being in the Cuban concentration camp.

As far as riots in America is concerned, we had our share, the anti draft riots during the Civil War, the Boston Tea party and the American Revolution could also be considered riots.
*********so?? The French had riots during the revolution but they are not our subject

Of course, I understand that as a Republican, only:"We had riots, yes, but only when
American Blacks began to thoroughly
identify with the Democrats who successfully taught them that generous social welfare (later revealed to be near genocidal) would be forthcoming as soon as they voted for them." Is it your opinion that only Blacks in America riot? Is that the party line?
********it is, generally speaking, very true

I dunno, I admire your research and attention to detail as well as your complete lack of realism as it relates to the real world.
*******if true I'm sure you'd provide examples

I can see why you are attracted to the Republican party, they have the same approach to
reality based on fiction.
*******care to explain??

"In the US, total deaths in such a heat wave would have been near 0." Unfortunately, this ain't true. We have more than 700 deaths in Chicago in a heat wave sometime in the 90's, at the time of our "feel-you-pain" president, and a Democratic mayor.

This statement ignores a number of truths particularly when speaking
of the second world war. The Soviet Union had the world's largest
and most powerful ground forces at the beginning of the second world
war. The disparity was enormous; on paper, soviet forces were at
least ten times stronger than that of any other nation. Without an
alliance with the soviet union, nazi victories would have been fleeting
and short-lived, but in fact Hitler did have an alliance. Nazi
panzergrups trained in the soviet union before the war. Poland was
jointly invaded by the communists and the nazis; and russian and german
troops met at a predefined line and celebrated. All the rest of
europe had been divided between the communists and the nazis -- on
paper anyway -- before the first bullet was even fired.

By the summer of 1942, when both german and soviet armies were preparing
to fight each other, that plan seemed triumphant. Of the targeted
countries only britain still survived and it was hanging on by its
fingernails.

Whether by luck or foresight, the united states is fortunate that it did
not make war on nazi germany while it was allied with the soviet
union. If we had fought such a war, the outcome might well have been
entirely different.

Another factor that Peter ignores is that military power is not just
a function of how many men one has in uniform, or how many soldiers
die. A fighting army spends bullets, tanks, planes, and artillery
shells at a staggering rate. If it doesn't have these things it
ceases to exist. After it entered the war, the US produced more
of these things than anyone else. To a surprising extent, both
british and soviet forces fought with american supplies.

Lastly and most relevant to Ted's post (which was after all about
France), the soviet union did not in any sense rescue france. Not
only were the communists allied with the nazis when the nazis conquered
france but in the latter stages of the war the communist goal was
to conquer all of europe, not just nazi germany.

Ted said,

"There would be a revolution if unemployment in the United States ever hit 10%."

I don't think so. I think it was higher than that when I first entered
the workforce; certainly it was in the states I lived in at the time.
I don't recall a revolution or even a hint of one.

The real disparity between France and the United States on the employment
front isn't the unemployment but rather the employment.

A significantly lower percentage of the french population is employed than
the american population. The disparity is much greater than the unemployment
figures would indicate.

It might seem that the figures would march in parallel, but in fact the
definition of unemployed is someone actively seeking employment. If a
person is not employed but is not looking for work then they are not
counted as 'unemployed.' People who are convinced that looking for a
job is hopeless are not counted as unemployed.

Ted said, "you are right about the 700 deaths(see below) but I was talking about nursing home deaths as a way to compare our social services to France's.

Klinenberg: In 1995 there were no uniform standards for determining a "heat related death," so officials had to develop them. Edmund Donoghue, Cook County's chief medical examiner, used state-of-the-art criteria to report 465 heat-related deaths for the heat wave week and 521 heat deaths for the month of July. But Mayor Richard M. Daley challenged these findings. "It's hot," the mayor told the media. "But let's not blow it out of proportion. . . . Every day people die of natural causes. You cannot claim that everybody who has died in the last eight or nine days dies of heat. Then everybody in the summer that dies will die of heat." Many local journalists shared Daley's skepticism, and before long the city was mired in a callous debate over whether the so-called heat deaths were—to use the term that recurred at the time—"really real."
