From a Republican point of view World History is really very simple: Democrats have been running the world for 5000 years and all they have to show for it are millions and million of dead bodies. Perhaps no term describes Democrats better than cultural elitism, particular given that the last election here in the US seems to have been a reaction against the Democrat's cultural elitism.
Alexander the Great was the Cultural elitist of his day. Julius Caesar of his day, Atila the Hun of his day, Napoleon of his day, George III of his day, Hitler of his day, and Alexander Hamilton of his day. All were so sure of the depth and breath of their benign elitism that the millions of dead bodies left in their wake hardly seemed to matter to them at all. Looking back we see them as parochial little prisoners of their own minds and times whose moral legacy exists in inverse proportion to the piles of dead bodies they left behind.
Today, sadly, little has changed. The most recent century was the bloodiest in history, by far. Modern elitists offered new rationales to acquire power in their elite hands that, whoops, somehow ended up killing a few million more people. Modern elitists have at least been cowed into developing amazingly new, creative, and intricate rationales by which to justify and acquire their deadly power, but in the end the results are the same, and the rationale no more sensible than the divine right of kings or socialism.
But, world history began to change at about 1800 when Thomas Jefferson established a bridgehead against elitism by succeeding in redefining the American revolution so that freedom mattered most of all, i.e., freedom from cultural elitists who would concentrate power in their militaristic, divine, socialist, or liberal hands. Two accidental exceptions occurred to Jeffersonian America however, the influence of which lingers strongly to this day and accordingly threatens to extinguish the last best hope for freedom from cultural elitists on earth: 1) In the 1930s Americans elected FDR who, quite by intellectual accident, concentrated power in his elite hands and thereby caused 10 years of international depression followed by 5 years of world war, and 2) in the 1960s LBJ did a similar thing, with what seemingly were the most benign of elitist motives, and still it amounted to near genocide against American blacks, just for starters.
Republicans say 5000 years of this Democratic elitism, in all its various forms is quite enough. They want to finally let people be free of elitist gov't so each individual is free to create all that his own talents and ambition will allow without subordinating the energy of millions of individuals to the will of some simplistic foolish dreamer or deadly elitist in a distant capitol. Republicans say, let's not even create the elitist Democratic machinery of power in Washington so that the would be elitists among us will be able to dream of somehow getting there hands on the deadly machinery of gov't which has laid waste to so much of human history. They say, let's be true to Thomas Jefferson's American revolution, and the modern Republicans who inherited it, and oppose the Democratic elitists who everywhere at every time of scoffed so loudly at freedom.
